If you’re like me - a collector of vintage “stuff” - especially vintage sewing items like buttons, you are also always looking for a way to get them out of the drawer or box they are in and showcased or displayed for all to see. This fun little project is the perfect way to display your vintage (or favorite modern) vintage buttons.
The Vintage Workshop offers a nice selection of vintage button cards - from single images to eight image collections. Each is perfect to showcase your favorite buttons. Click here to browse our vintage button card images to find one that matches your buttons you want to display. Then read below for the simple instructions to create these little cards.
Some images are blank (no buttons shown) while others are full/partial button cards (image includes buttons). Either will work because we are going to sew your buttons right on top. We used the blank card called simply Empty Button Card. Print your card onto card stock - you could use regular paper but it might not be strong enough. Position your buttons and using strong thread simply hand sew your buttons into place on the card.
Next, cut a piece of chipboard (or heavier weight board) into the size of the button card. Adhere the card to the board using your favorite adhesive (glue or double sided tape). Next add a loop of your favorite ribbon or trim to the back so you can hang them.
Another option would be to mount them in a side by side in a shadow box with other notions you might want to show off. Here is a shadow box I created using images from The Vintage Workshop and my favorite vintage notions.
