Fall Quilt Market Adventures!

Monday, November 16th, 2009

October was a busy month! In early October travels took us to Houston, Texas for the International Quilt Market. We exhibit each year at this trade only event. It is our chance to share our new Indygo Junction patterns and books to quilt and fabric arts retailers as well as preview new fabrics and products for the coming months. After almost 20 years of doing this show, we still enjoy going to Houston–a fabulous convention center and bustling downtown make it a great destination for the show…not to mention the wonderful food. Here is a link to one of our favorites La Ninfa’s-a great video too!  To see the new designs we offered click here.

Unique Table Decor for Fall

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

A Fall dinner party at my friend Amy’s home inspired me to share her great idea for Autumn table decor- waxed leaves. We have a beautiful collection of color to choose from in Kansas City this time of year.

The first step is easy and fun.  Collect some of the beautiful leaves you can find in your yard this time of year - make it a family event and get the kids to each pick their favorite three or four leaves.

Next, pick up some parafin wax - we used Gulf Wax - it’s a general use parafin wax for canning and candle making.  Be sure to follow any directions on the box as to heating and melting the wax. We used a double boiler method.  Keep pots and pans clean by using a large empty can to put the wax in to melt.  Then we put the can into a shallow pan of water and set it to boil. Once the water starts heating, the wax in the can melts.

Then for the fun part.  Just dip in each leaf one at a time and lay on waxed/parchment paper to dry.  The results were wonderful.  Once dry/hardened, just spread the leaves around the table.  The wax coating preserved the leaves so we could share in the beautiful colors longer.

Try it for yourself. It’s fast and easy and perfect for a Thanksgiving table.  Here are a few of my favorite Vintage Workshop images with leaves.

A Curious Sofa Halloween

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Kansas City is filled with wonderful shops. I am fortunate to live within several miles of one of the most creative and visually inspiring retail venues in town, if not in the country. Deb Dusenberry’s Curious Sofa. Deb’s Halloween Open House, this year titled “Freak Show” , is always an inspiring event. I wanted to share a few photos with you from the opening. Note Greg Johnson’s collage work, he has been a contributor to several of The Vintage Workshop’s collage offerings. If you have a chance to visit the store, the holiday season is a great time! Here is a link to Curious Sofa’s website and blog.

Michigan Cherries & Free Download

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

I spent several weeks on Torch River this Summer with my family. In several upcoming posts I will share some of our adventures. A trip to pick cherries is one of my favorite “Up North” traditions. This Summer my niece Paige (4) and my daughter Emma (7) and I visited Nagy Orchards in Kewadin, Michigan. We were there at the end of the picking season which was several weeks later than usual and lasted longer than in past years because of the cool weather throughout July. We found several dark cherry trees to pick from and rows of sour cherries were several rows over. We ended eating almost as many as we picked! They were delicious! Mr. Nagy graciously took us on a tour of the processing of cherries after they are shaken from the trees . They are stored in huge containers of ice cold water before being lifted on to the cherry truck (school bus with only the cab) to be delivered to the cherry processing plant several miles away. This farm harvests 1.4 million lbs of cherries each year. Sweet cherries are best straight off the stem, sours are for my mom’s cherry pies, and dried cherries are for salads and cookies. Here is a recipe I tried last week and the whole family enjoyed!!

“Nor shall their story be forgot.”

This image - Never Forgotten - SI0648 - is available for purchase at The Vintage Workshop. While it was first written as a remembrance of the American Civil War, it still holds a dear message that rings true today. Let us remember those who lost their lives today and all those who serve our country.  We shall never forget their story.

Trip to Westin & The Farm

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

I was talking to my dear friend Alexis last night, discussing great blogs she had found and she mentioned she did not think I was blogging enough. I explained to her that I would love to be creating more posts and had hundreds of photos ready combine with “stories” BUT I have the following other activities I am currently involved in: proofreading 16 new patterns and a new book for Indygo Junction’s upcoming Quilt Market in Houston, creating all related marketing materials, packing 2000 lbs plus of trade show equipment and samples for our three booths, writing a creative woman’s inspirational/project  book that is over 200 pages and trying to finish a chapter a week to meet deadline for getting to press, the list goes on…not to mention, most importantly, parenting activities related to my second grader Emma and fifth grader Jack that I share with my husband Bob…SOOO I am up at 5:30 am preparing this post with photos from a June trip to a favorite “vintage” town of mine Westin, Missouri, and a trip to my friend, Amy’s family farm in Hiawatha, KS.  Westin has some wonderful shops including a fun antique mall, Three Squirrels and A Nut, here is their invitation to visit…  “See what tools grandmother used in the kitchen or grandpa used in the garage. They have buttons, bows, glassware, spoons, lamps, radios, mirrors, prints, paintings, music boxes and dolls. Something for everyone.”
