Found this album and journal at the Antique show last weekend in Petoskey, Michigan. Loved the heavily embossed cover, then noticed how the card had stained previous page with a sepia toned “negative”. I would love to educate myself further on the different methods of lithography printing used to create these beautiful pieces of ephemera..I took pictures of a few of my favorites..

Fabulous Find at Petoskey Antique Show!
Sunday, July 11th, 2010Excellent Advice!
Saturday, June 26th, 2010I was just visiting Nancy Zieman founder of Nancy’s Notions and the PBS series Sewing with Nancy. She invited me to be a guest on her program to discuss my new book Vintage Notions. Knowing my love for all things vintage particularly those related to sewing, she gave me a fun book I would like to share…Note the good advice on esthetic and function in How to Look Your Best, the mention of atrocious exaggerations that we are fortunate not to have to deal with in modern fashion, and that ornamentation should never seem to be stuck on, it should seem to be an integral part of the structure and follow the main lines of construction. This fun and timeless advice is very similar to some of the content in my new book Vintage Notions. Visit amybarickman.com for to preview pages of the book and watch a video explaining the story behind the project!
NewHouse Women’s Shelter Event - Recipes of Hope
Saturday, April 3rd, 2010On March 9th, I had the privilege of volunteering with Terry Grahl of Enchanted Makeovers at an event for NewHouse Women’s Shelter. Enchanted Makeovers is a wonderful nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming shelters for women and children into places of peace and possibilities—not just where basic needs are met, but also spiritual needs for hope and beauty.
They sponsored an event here in Kansas City to benefit the women of NewHouse Shelter - a shelter for victims of domestic violence. The event, called Recipes of Hope, involved cooking at Function Junction with the 30 women who live at Newhouse and sitting down to the meal at nearby Gifted Hands (www.giftedhandskc.com) while sharing laughter, tears and fellowship.
Terry & our team helped to set a beautiful table (see the pictures of the neat vintage box centerpieces) and made it a day to remember. The raffle prizes and gift bags were all handcrafted with a special touch of love. A beautiful quilt created by Debbie Maddy (www.calicocarriage.com) was awarded in a drawing. Each participant also received a full-filled gift bag that included beauty items like makeup, personal items, a pillowcase (donated as part of the Harper’s Fabrics participation in the 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge) plus each received a handmade apron to use in the cooking class with Rachel Gaffney (www.rachelgaffneys.com).
It was such fun to mingle and fellowship with this courageous group of women and see how our community came together to help brighten their lives. I encourage everyone to be a part of something in your community that helps spread the joy through crafting, sewing or just sharing your joy and love of life. Enchanted Makeovers is looking to build a partner network nationwide. Please visit Terry’s website www.enchantedmakeovers.com to learn more about this wonderful charity.

Create Your Own Card Set
Tuesday, December 29th, 2009
You can easily create your own boxed card sets for a personalized birthday gift this year. You will need a few supplies like glue or double sided tape; a color coordinating box to fit your cards in (we choose a skinny pink box); coordinating ribbon, a scrap of coordinating paper to mount box cover image (we choose black), corresponding number of envelopes to fit your cards (again we choose black) and card stock weight paper.
Simply printing your favorite image (we used Eiffel Tower - SI0130) onto a card stock paper. You might want to try a glossy paper for shinier cards. Cut them out and fold in half - cards are done!! Print a smaller version and mount on coordinating paper - see box top in picture above. You use this smaller version for the box lid.
Choose a coordinating ribbon to tie your box closed and tie your cards together. Be sure the length of ribbon you cut off first will tie around your closed box. Center it on the top of your box and adhere. Then glue/tape your image to the center of the top of the box over the ribbon.
Tie extra ribbon around the cards and envelopes. Optional: Put a wide strip of vellum around the cards/envelopes and tie the ribbon around centered on the vellum strip. See photo for details. Put them in the box and then tie the ribbon around the back. It’s a wonderful gift that’s easy to make.
Until next time…
Inspiring Gift Tags
Wednesday, December 9th, 2009
You can create beautiful packages this Christmas without spending a lot of money on wrapping paper and ribbons. Adding special gift tags can make a plainly wrapped gift into something special. Try wrapping your gift in brown paper or better yet, next time you go to the grocery store ask for paper and use brown paper sacks as your gift wrap.
The key to creating inspiring gift tags is embellishing and layering. Start by either buying blank tags at your local craft or hobby store or make your own out of old manilla folders. Use paint, stamps, tissue paper, old pattern paper, etc to give the tag the background you are looking for. Second print your favorite Vintage Workshop Christmas image to put as your focal piece. Finally, embellish using odds and ends around your house like buttons, lace, fabric scraps, etc.
Write your To: and From: on the back. Tie with ribbon, twine or raffia to your package. It’s easy and your friends and family will love it! Have fun being creative! Until next time…
